Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York and has attended several schools, including James Madison High School, Brooklyn College, and the University of Chicago. By 1981, Bernie was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont’s biggest city, by only 10 votes. As Burlington’s mayor, he helped make major improvements in affordable housing, child care, environmental protection, progressive taxation, youth programs, and the arts. When Bernie Sanders joined the House of Representatives and became a member of Congress, he fought for working families and the shrinking middle class and earned the nickname “the amendment king” for passing more amendments than any other member of Congress.
