Before the council has held the Church was actually further away from the original Catholic mass than it was after the council. The mass was very community based and all people were allowed to participate. During the medieval period the mass was changed; the aulter was against the back wall of the church, the priest faced away from the people and spoke Latin, everyday people weren't allowed to be a part of the mass.
