After WWII, Berlin, Germany was divided into four sections, and was distributed between the United States, England, France, and the USSR. The reason for the construction was to stop the mass exodus of people leaving for the West. About 2.5 million people flooded into West Germany since 1949. Ultimately, the Berlin Wall affected, everyone even if you were lucky to be in the West, many lost their families, pets, and former lives just to escape to freedom and democracy. Being on the communist side not only affected people's lives, and families, but changed the way people thought for themselves. Surrounded by newspapers that told lies, old clothes, Trabant cars, and ate old food, no one felt safe in their own house. It created what London School of Economics associate professor Daniel Sturm calls a “perfect experiment.” People living on the other side of their work lost their jobs and all money that came with it, without money many families living in the East starved to death. Many people lost the hope of seeing their families
