When WWII ended (1945) 2 Allied peace conferences were held to decide the fate of the German territories(History.com). At the peace conference the Allies split Germany into occupation zones that were divided from East to West (History.com). The Western zone consisted of the USA, Great Britain, and the French territories (Staff). The Eastern section of Germany belonged do the Soviet Union(history.com). Berlin was located deep in Eastern Germany(History.com). The Allies were allowed to occupy West Berlin due to the peace treaty. West Germany becomes the FRG short for the Federal Republic of Germany.(Burkhardt). Eastern Germany becomes the GDR or the German Democratic Republic (Burkhardt). This shows how the 2 main groups became separated. The agreement will cause conflict between the two powers. The Soviet Union then declared the GDR a soviet state(History.com).
