Egaeus is the narrator and main character of Edgar Allan Poe's short story called "Berenice". One of the themes of this story is obsession. Egaeus' mental illness can be interpreted as obsessive compulsive disorder, which he's had since he was a young boy. He describes his thoughts in the following quote: "Then came the full fury of my monomania, and I struggled in vain against its strange and irresistible influence. In the multiplied objects of the external world I had no thoughts but for the teeth." The visual idea of Berenice's teeth was constantly on his mind.
