The first battle is between Beowulf and Grendel, the sin stained demon. Grendel had kill the men that were in the mead hall. Beowulf and Grendel were fighting because Grendel has killed the men in the mead hall because killing and being evil is his true self. Beowulf offers his help to Hrothgar to kill grendel. Once Beowulf killed Grendel, the geats saw him as generous and thought that he was the only one to kill monsters. Beowulf brings one of grendel’s arm as proof to the geats and the kingdom. He showed them that is a mortal man that slay evil things.The geats start to see beowulf as a strong and noble hero. Beowulf begins to think that he is a hero to the geats. The difference in this fight is that beowulf is killing a demon and he is a young prince.

Now in the poem, 50 years have passed and beowulf is the king of the kingdom. The dragon gets disturbing by a thief and it begins to terrorize the geats. Beowulf being a old man steps up to the challenge. Beowulf begins to slay the dragon but he gets wounded. The dragon is slayed with the help of Wiglaf. Slaying the dragon was a dare to him because he sees himself as powerful. The difference in this fight is that Beowulf isn't as young and strong as he once was. He is an old man and time has made him grown. Also beowulf’s mentally becomes real when he is wound, he realizes that he is a mortal like everyone else.
