Beowulf's Three Fights

Beowulf has major battles throughout this epic poem. In Beowulf's three fights with three monsters he uses different methods, techniques, and weapons to win. In these epic and hard fought fights, Beowulf finds a way to survive. Beowulf's first fight was against Grendel. This shows Beowulf's strength. Beowulf is a monster that has killed many, "The God-cursed brute was creating havoc:/ Greedy and grim, he grabbed thirty men/ From their resting places and rushed to his lair,/ Flushed up and inflamed from the raid,/ Blundering back with the butchered corpses" (Lines 121-125). He had also had many people try to kill him. All the people that tried to kill Grendel failed wearing armour and using weapons. So, Beowulf decided that he would fight bare-handed, "he again states/ his intentions to fight Grendel bare-handed'' (Excerpted Text before Fight With Grendel). He stated that he was stronger than anyone else, …show more content…
This fight occurs because Grendel's mom is angry about Grendel losing his arm and dying in the fight with Beowulf and she is "Seeking vengeance for for her son's death" (Excerpt Text underneath Grendel's Mother). Before the fight begins, Beowulf puts on armour and gets Unferth's sword, this shows that this fight will be harder than the battle with Grendel. As there are weapons, it shows that the fights will be more brutal. When Beowulf arrives at Grendel's mom's lair, it's described as a "hellish turn-hole" (Line 1513). The location went from an area of joy or happiness, in a great hall to a place that is hell-like. Grendel's mom, "lunged and clutched and managed to catch him/ In her brutal grip" (Lines 1501-1502). Throughout this entire battle, Beowulf struggles to escape. Whenever Beowulf hit Grendel's mom with Unferth's sword, it bounced or reflected off of her. Finally, Beowulf finds a giant sword and kills Grendel's mom. This fight, because he was wearing armour and using weapons, it showed a weak side of

In a world that is constantly evolving, the traits and actions of a hero adapt over time. What constitutes as heroism in one culture could be cowardice in another. In terms of literature, Beowulf has stood the test of time and has consistently been regarded as the epitome of heroes. While the character for whom the epic is named after performs a few daring deeds, what sets Beowulf apart from others is the exploration of his heroism in two distinct phases. The beginning of the tale starts with Beowulf in his youth; he is strong, brave, quick to volunteer to do what needs to be done.…

Beowulf is presented to be extremely strong. When Beowulf and Grendel meet swords and other mortal weapon will not hurt Grendel, so Beowulf grips Grendel’s arms with so much strength he rips off one of Grendel’s arms. Then Beowulf engages in battle with Grendel’s mother, and when Hrunting fails him there is a giant sword on the wall in the cave. “Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length.…

Before going into battle with Grendel, Beowulf made the decision not to fight with a weapon because Grendel didn’t have one. Beowulf stated, “hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend. Whichever one death fells must deem it a just judgement by God” (Heaney 13). This quote demonstrates the not only is humility need to defeat evil, but courage as well. It took a lot of courage to fight Grendel with no armor or sword and just fight bare handed.…

Hi Sabrina. I really loved reading your post but if you had explained why Beowulf wanted to fight Grendel in more detailed way it would make your post more interesting to a reader rather than just quoting directly from the book. I think Beowulf says that he will fight Grendel in hand to hand combat without using any weapons because he wanted to show Grendel that he is a true warrior which is why he mentions that "the victory will be chosen by god." Also Beowulf knew that the weapons would not harm Grendel in any way that is why he wanted the fight to be fair so he said that he wanted a fist fight. Other than that I agree with you in most of the part as you have similar idea and mine.…

Beowulf indeed defeats Grendel without arms, and displays his overwhelming strength. During the encounter, it is stated, “the captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth” (p. 1648). Another display of Beowulf’s strength is the fact that he rips Grendel’s arm completely off, when Grendel was trying to escape.…

Beowulf always shows great bravery in every battle he fights: “I have heard moreover that the monster scorns/ in his reckless way to use weapons/ therefore, to heighten Hygelac’s fame/ and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce/ sword and the shelter of the broad shield,/ the heavy war-board shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand/ is how it will be, a life-and-death/ fight with the fiend.” (Beowulf 433-440.) Beowulf proves using weapons or protections would make the battle too easy. He confronts Grendel with his weapons off and fights in bare hands to show his bravery. The battle describes Beowulf’s strength as a legendary epic hero’s.…

That being so Beowulf is possessed with superhuman powers which he can use to defeat those monsters. Even the monsters are afraid of his power, and you can see this in Grendel. Grendel “had met a man whose hands were harder; his mind was flooded with fear-but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight hard grip. Grendel’s one thought was to run” (327-330). In the beginning of the story, he tells his feats “I drove five giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth.…

It is clear that she is a greater adversary than her son to Beowulf, and that the fight scene puts Beowulf in a position that in a way led to his final demise. He is driven by his reputation throughout the poem and his ego is what leads him to take on the dragon, as shown in lines 2348-2350, “Nor did he worry much about the dragon’s warfare…he had survived many battles.” Despite this arrogance, he needed the aid of others to kill the dragon. Perhaps this is partly because he nearly died at the hands of a woman, so what is he to do when face to face with a fire-breathing beast? Grendel’s mother’s strength carries on as a reminder to Beowulf that he is not invincible, but his ego gets in his way and blinds him from this lesson, ultimately leading to his…
