The king knows Beowulf is capable of handling himself with his physical abilities. Through his battles, he shows his capabilities and accomplishments and when the time arose to battle Grendel's mother he refused any and all help because he knew any help would end up dead and he no longer wanted any innocent deaths. He also shows he's courageous in these battles because he doesn't win just one and leave, he wins one and goes on to the others knowing the risks. Nobody else would when there were other ways of handling the situation.
