Beowulf’s quest for fame relates to his culture's importance of having a well-known identity. The Anglo-Saxon society respected characteristics such as kinship, courage, and strength. Beowulf exhibits these characteristics and uses them as a means of becoming the story’s epic hero. He battles the monster Grendel and his mother, as well as the dragon, in order to prove his greatness and courage to his people. He even goes as far as to use only his bare hands in order to defeat Grendel because it would make him look mightier to his people. Beowulf, even when all hope seemed lost, continued to fight against Grendel’s mother for the sake of achieving fame and glory. Beowulf’s identity concerns him throughout the poem.
