What does it take to be a hero? According to Merriam- Webster dictionary a hero is, “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” In Beowulf the hero is Beowulf, but does he have heroic attributes? Yes, Beowulf is brave, strong, and courageous, but he lacks the most important heroic attributes, such as, selfishless and humility. Beowulf is too self-centered and prideful to be called a hero. While reading Beowulf there are many times when Beowulf does not have a real reason for fighting the sea monster, fighting Grendel and Grendel’s mother, or fighting the dragon.
