As a great hero Beowulf traveled many places and encountered in many battles. These battles have a major role towards the plot of the epic poem. Through his three battles, he fights Grendel, Grendel's mother and a dragon. The most symbolic battle to the plot of Beowulf is the one that leads him to his death, which is fighting the dragon.
People fight battles to achieve wealth and fame. Through winning battles there's the hope to gain treasure and land. Beowulf would battle this dragon for “this dragon's treasure, his gold and everything hidden in that tower”(88). Battling the dragon would eventually lead to his death making this battle very symbolic to the theme of the story. “Or war will sweep me to bitter death”(88).
