One way Beowulf is an epic hero is that he has larger than life qualities. One example is, Beowulf boasts about fighting Grendel with no weapons (16). Beowulf ended up killing Grendel by ripping off his arm with bare hands (18). Another example of Beowulfs larger than life qualities is how he slayed all of the monsters in the sea during the swimming match with Brecca (14). Beowulf fought Grendel due to him terrorizing the Danes. Beowulf brags that he is better than anyone else because he killed monsters at sea and survived (15). Another revenge was when Beowulf finally me with Grendel's mother and they fiercely fought each other, Beowulf then grabbed her by the neck, breaking her bones and he pierced her flesh with his sword. Beowulf then swam across the bloody swamp while his men were waiting to see if he would be coming back and if they would ever see their lord/ leader ever again. When the dragon burned down Beowulfs house, he has a weakness of him being too independent (38). Beowulf was so used to fighting his own battles, as he got older his strength was taken away from him. When the dragon attacked his land it was his responsibility to protect his people. He was overwhelmed by the dragon and had to be saved by Wiglaf one of the Thanes. Now his strength is no longer a strength it has been turned into a weakness. Even though when Beowulf was younger he had the strength as he grew older he thought he would never have weaknesses like
