11/december, 2015 Was the monster slayer a hero or a villain Beowulf shows numerous hero characteristic in this epic poem as he endured battles with many wicked beast. This highlights that he is a hero at heart but a warrior in mind. He leads his men into combat and always leave successful. Every successful battle he grows not only as a king but, he becomes wiser. Making him the hero he is now Beowulf’s first battle he has that shows hero characteristics was the epic battle of Grendel. He was young in mind had but had pride. Beowulf accepted the chance for the beast to get her justice and for him to exert his strength. This highlights his heroic state of mind, he could have let her terrorise the kingdom after he defeated Grendel. This shows that he willing to go beyond. “Beowulf's defeat of Grendel's mother demonstrates remarkable courage and perseverance. Seeking to avenge the death of her son and recover his claw, the mother attacks Heorot the next night, surprising everyone. In the morning, Beowulf tracks her to a dark, swampy mere where she and her son live in a cave at the bottom of the lake. There Beowulf defeats her with the help of a magic giant sword and returns with the sword's hilt and Grendel's head as trophies”(Grendel). His decision freed Hrothgar's men from a lot of misery and the warriors from being constantly slayed by the wicked beast …show more content…
This epic battle was the climax of his life with all his leadership and warrior abilities exerting at once. This is a point in life where all heroes become well known for their skill and ability.“Beowulf thinks that he must have offended God in some way to be attacked by the dragon. He decides to fight the beast. He orders that a special shield be made for him, one made entirely of iron instead of wood. He chooses not to raise an army to fight the dragon, believing that he is equal to the task since he has overcome so many dangers in his life, including defeating Grendel”(Dragon). He defends his kingdom when all his trusted warriors fled the scene. and leave his most brave warrior in charge. At a old age he gained wits but lacked in strength but still managed to defeat the furious
