Beowulf is a long story about Beowulf who is a warrior of his people and his many intense battles with enemies. There are plenty of elements that make this an epic poem. There are many instances where the poem shows characteristics needed for an epic. There are great battles between heroic figures and large villains.
Beowulf appears to the land of Herot. Herot is an enemy of Beowulf but he is there to help Herot in a time of need. There is a great monster killing the people of Herot night after night. Beowulf shows up and is approached by the soldiers of Herot and is questioned about who he is. There was only peace in those years of leadership. But one day a dragon started attacking his people because of stolen merchandise taken from the dragon. Since the last 50 years had been peaceful there had been no need for an army or any training. Beowulf, now in his 70s most likely, was the only one who had experience in any fighting. Therefore he had to be the one to fight the dragon. He took a small crew of men as back up to fight the dragon. When they got there most of his men fled but one. But Beowulf wasn’t scared to fight the dragon even by himself if he had to. He sprung into battle with the dragon. It was not an easy fight. Soon the one man who stayed with him helped Beowulf fight the dragon. Beowulf was struck and was now laying on the ground dying. The dragon was slain to never harm anyone ever again. But, Beowulf was also slain by the dragon. Before Beowulf had his last words he told the only one who assisted him to be the leader and that he wanted to be remembered by the village with a monument that contained his ashes.
