The difference of culture from the 6th century to 2005 had changed greatly. Our values, appearances, and behavior have evolved and can be seen when contrasting the epic Beowulf and the movie Beowulf and Grendel. One way to contrast between the epic and the movie is through characters. The two characters that shows the most change between the two publications is Grendel, the troll, grinder of teeth and Beowulf, son of Ecgtheow.
Grendel's behavior throughout this novel is that of a complete monster. He has no remorse and will destroy & kill anyone in his way, with no purpose. A quote from the book says “his glee was demonic , picturing the mayhem: before morning he would rip life from limb and devour them, feed on their flesh”, and this shows how Grendel's behavior in this epic is iniquitous and how every evening he would attack the mead hall and feed on the flesh of the humans there. In the epic Grendel is depicted as a monster or giant. “Every nail, claw-scale and spur, every spike and welt on the hand of that heathen brute was like barbed steel. Everybody said there was no honed iron hard enough to pierce him through, no time proofed blade, that could cut his brutal blood caked claw” shows him as a real monster and depicts the earlier culture of the world. In Beowulf and Grendel, Grendel is seen more as a human. Although in the beginning he is a child with a beard, he has more human like characteristics that show how times have changed. He can also talk and communicate with Selma the witch which the Grendel in the epic could not do. Even though he does look like a human he still does act like a monster. This is probably because the culture now wants excitement and subsistence. Although Grendel is the character that shows the most difference in the two publications, we can also contrast between the two
