In the Modern American culture, villains are created to be both evil and likable. In the poem Beowulf, Grendel is an unlikable villain. Grendel possesses no qualities that make readers want to enjoy him. Grendel is described as a deformed figure that kills people with no remorse. These qualities show that Grendel is created to be strictly evil. In Modern American culture, villains can become just as popular as heroes.
