The Perfect Anglo-Saxon Man Epic literature depicts various values of the Anglo-Saxon culture. Glory in battle, courage and honor had huge importance in Anglo-Saxon culture. . They were motivated by glory to do the most impossible tasks. The Anglo-Saxons also strongly believed in fate, destiny and God. They believed that the Almighty created the world as we know it and hence he controlled everything and everyone in it. The Anglo-Saxons believed that all of their accomplishments were achieved because God wanted them to succeed. They also had a strong belief that a person dies because they were meant to die at that certain time and place. The Anglo-Saxons felt that dying bravely in battle was better than living as a coward. They were motivated by glory to do the most impossible tasks. Beowulf is the model of perfection for Anglo-Saxon men. “I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons; therefore to heighten Hygelac’s fame and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce…” (443-448). Beowulf is ready to do anything for his king and his kingdom. Even other knights from different parts of the world recognize Beowulf’s loyalty. “I believe what you have told me: that you are a troop loyal to your king” (290-291). The coast-guard recognized Beowulf’s loyalty after talking to him. Beowulf received many treasures for all the battles he won but he dedicated all his treasures to his king. Before fighting with Grendel’s mother, Beowulf decides that if he is to die, all of his treasures would go to his king. “And be sure also, my beloved Hrothgar, to send Hygelac the treasures I received” (1480-1482). This shows how loyal Beowulf is to his king. By this we also understand that if he is not able to come out alive, all of his past accomplishments and awards belong to his beloved
