Battles remain as one of the most important components of epic poems, particularly those following the hero’s journey template. Beowulf represents an excellent example of a true epic poem due to not only the nature of the poem, but the battles themselves. Beowulf approaches each fight in a different way and each encounter has a different outcome. Additionally, the reason why Beowulf fights each battle to begin with tends to both differentiate and share likenesses from battle to battle. The nature and elements of each battle share many likenesses and have many differences.

Beowulf spots a mighty sword in the armory of the creature only he could wield, due to the size and weight of the ancient weapon.(Beowulf, 107) Beowulf then decapitates Grendel’s mom, and the ancient sword melts down to the hilt. Beowulf stays true to his word and takes on the monster, bravely (and almost recklessly) casting aside man made objects to give Grendel a ‘fair’ fight. Beowulf also acts with honor and virtue. This characteristic is seen many times but is most notable when he fights Grendel in hand-to-hand combat; he argues that is would give him an unfair advantage against the beast and make the victory cheap and unworthy. The warrior’s code that he abides to is what makes him extend the same respect he would to any other foe to Grendel.…

When fighting Grendel, Beowulf shows the most strength and heroism than any other battle he partakes in, this is because he fought him without any armour or weapons, while in the other two battles, either a weapon or armour are needed because he is incapable of defeating the foe without assistance. Another big difference among the three battles is the motivation behind them. Beowulf fought grendel and had motivation from the heinous crimes he had committed to the revellers in the mead hall, in the other two duels, his motivation is not near as empowering, for he is either trying to defend his reputation or repaying the king of Danes. A third and most significant difference between the battle where the armour and weapons used. In the first battle, no armour or weapon is needed, Beowulf is powerful enough to defeat the foe without assistance.…
