The god-forsaken creature, Grendel, arose from the murky depths of the fog-filled swamp. Driven by the urge to kill anyone he came across, he ran swiftly into the night and began his journey to Herot. Deftly he ran through the darkness toward the gilt hall. Having visited Hrothgar’s residence previously, he knew the path. Though, never before, nor ever again, had Herot been so furiously defended, had Grendel’s arrival met with such resistance. Eternally devoid of all joy, he ripped away the door, shredding its iron hinges without an ounce of effort. He entered rancorously, speeding across the inlaid flooring. Eyes were following each of his demonic steps, waiting for the moment Grendel unsheathed his razor-like claws. Grendel clutched and clawed at the nearest Geat. The Geat shrieked with horror for a brief moment before Grendel cut him apart with powerful jaws and teeth like daggers, exsanguinated him, pinned him to the ground, and, with a loud final snap of the creature’s jaws, delivered the Geat to the afterlife. Wasting no time, he lunged for another sleeping body. He snatched at the light-sleeper, Beowulf, with his bloodied claws and, before he could make another move, was seized by Beowulf. His clawed hands were bent backwards at an unnatural angle as Beowulf leaned on one arm. The bloodthirsty creature, the demonic horror, knew in an instant that nowhere on Earth had he ever encountered a man whose power rivaled his own in such a way as this. Fear washed away the thoughts of blood-soaked feasting that had previously engulfed his mind. Nothing on Earth could wrench his clawed hands nor himself from the vise-like grip. The creature felt the urgent need to flee to the foul bog from whence he came. This Herot was far different than the one he had emptied of life previously.
