Furthermore, when they introduced Grendel's mom they described her as “No female, no matter how fierce, could have come with man’s strength fought with the power and courage men fight with” (400-403). Yet, in the movie women had more of a storyline, for example they gave Wealhtheow a more influential role and also, Grendel’s mother was given . Throughout time, and especially during the middle ages, a woman’s role and position in the household as well as society was very much imposed upon being described as more at home and without a creditable opinion on important matters. But as time went on women became more educated and liberated developing strong opinions, being less confined, thus leaving the impression of women in traditional societies as being more “dangerous” or even “evil” as conveyed in Beowulf, Lanval, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the Wife of Baths. During the mid-evil time period, the bible was seen as a huge source on how people and men especially saw gender roles and what was right from wrong. Since the beginning, they have used the bible in reference to women’s nature and have compared them to Eve and the apple and evidently saw women as prone to temptation, evil, untrustworthy, seductive, weak, acting purely on their own intentions and…

Throughout his story, Beowulf is portrayed as a mighty warrior who has a history of overcoming his adversaries with relative ease. However, when comparing his first battle against Grendel and second battle against Grendel’s Mother, it is evident to the reader that the latter was more challenging. Beowulf is an epic poem that follows the life of a great hero as he fights monsters and gains fame across the lands. Beowulf is seen as the manliest of men back in his day and even today he is thought of as one of the great heroes of legend. Attributing homosexuality to Beowulf may seem like a bit of a stretch, but there are elements of a deeper love for another man in the poem. Unlike the Wanderer, Beowulf exhibits a more fatherly love for Hrothgar, one that goes beyond the possible love affairs between the two men, and into a more deeper connection that would come from the same love a long married couple experiences. Beowulf comes to the aid of Hrothgar during the reign of terror brought upon Hrothgar’s people by the monster Grendel.…

His willingness to sacrifice his life for his people is yet another characteristic of an epic hero. The first major example of Beowulf’s bravery is presented to the reader when he decides to fight Grendel with his bare hands saying, “I have heard, / too, that the monster’s scorn of men/ is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. / Nor will I” (166-169). In this instance, Beowulf presents his bravery by stating that he refuses to fight Grendel with a weapon, simply because Grendel would not be using one. Beowulf knows that there is a possibility that he could get hurt, or even worse die, but his bravery and willingness to protect others overpowers those thoughts.…
