Because of his strength, courage and honor, Beowulf exhibits all the necessary characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon epic hero. He introduces himself to Hrothgar, and claims that “[His people] have seen [his] strength themselves”(Canto 4 line 151). His strength was self-claimed but not untrue, as he proves his strength later on in the epic poem. His courage and bravery show when he faces Grendel, as he “took off the helmet and handed his attendant / the patterned sword”(Canto 10 lines 672-673), determining that wielding any kind of weapon or protection would make the battle far too easy.
