Beowulf: Poem Analysis

Another big difference from the poem that can be seen in the movie is the portrayal of the main character, Beowulf. In the poem, Beowulf is shown to be a big hero to everyone around him. The movie shows Beowulf's heroism as an issue instead of being the solution. Although the movie follows the same storyline as the poem, they have different depictions of Beowulf's courage. To show the difference of Beowulf's courage in the poem and movie, Beowulf's enemy, Grendel must be described first. In the movie, Grendel is shown as a childlike, innocent, and sad monster. Annoyed by the music and happiness of Heorot, Grendel came and started fighting and killing Danes. This is when Beowulf arrives to help Hrothgar and his people. Beowulf decides to take on Grendel without using weapons to keep the fight fair. Beowulf said, "this evil beast in his …show more content…
Those differences were utilized to make the movie better suited for the current time period. The plots from the poem, Grendel’s mother, the events after the killing of Grendel’s mother, and the dragon fight scenes, were changed by Zemeckis in the movie to make the storyline a little more interesting instead of following the poem’s storyline strictly. Also, the character of Beowulf in the poem was displayed as brave and courageous all throughout the poem. A story involving a brave hero that defeats monsters and saves people is a cliché story line used in Old English writing. The movie is changed to view the protagonist in a different way. Beowulf is displayed as a brave hero at first but as the movie progressed, he is shown to be less hero like and have more average man traits. Showing that the protagonist of the story is actually flawed and more human is more idealistic for the modern age. This is how the poem and movie differ because it seems as though the movie’s plots and characters were changed to make it more realistic and

The stories of Beowulf and Grendel are very similar in many aspects. There is only one major difference. In Beowulf, we do not know what Grendel is thinking, like we do in Grendel. Both stories portray Beowulf and Grendel as monsters, but they are both actually misunderstood humans, not monsters. Being misunderstood is one of the hardest things to be.…

The Evolution of Beowulf Throughout the story of Beowulf the great hero accomplishes three great feats against three terrible monsters. On the surface of each battle readers can see that Beowulf portrays wlenco, however, if we look a little deeper into each conflict we can see positive character development within Beowulf himself. In this poem Beowulf clashes with Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon that ravages his community; within each battle Beowulf has a subtle change in character that eventually leads him to become a great king. Before the author reaches Beowulf’s first conflict he writes Beowulf off as arrogant and bold.…

What separates the epic poem Beowulf and John Gardner’s Grendel is how the devil-spawn Grendel, is presented. Is he a monster set on destroying humanity, or is he a misunderstood creature that is just trying to make amends with Hrothgar and his people? Gardner’s Grendel is a retelling of the story of Beowulf, through the monster’s eyes in depth. On the other hand, the epic poem introduces Grendel briefly, yet assertively. He is described as a terrible, evil being spawned by the devil and shunned by the most high.…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…

In the movie and poem, Beowulf offers to fight Grendel himself after explaining that he owes Hrothgar a favor because Hrothgar helped his father. In the poem; “Beowulf’s last battle”, he wants to be remembered as strong. Beowulf stated that he never knew fear, as a youth, he fought in endless battles but now that he is old he will still fight and seek for the fame. Meaning, he undergoes a lot of battles back then and now that he is old, his age won’t stop him from fighting. However, in the movie; he becomes more of a monster when he turned on himself by not being courageous when he needed to be, by allowing Grendel’s mother and succumbing to his weakness of beautiful women he causes a fire-breathing dragon to attack his land.…

Beowulf is the story of one of the greatest heroes with no weaknesses, but has also been told as the story of the greatest hero with many weaknesses. As old poems and stories are told over long periods of time they tend to change, the same thing tends to happen when poems get turned into movies. This is also true for the story of Beowulf. Beowulf is an old Northern European story about a great hero who goes to a different land to help them defeat their monsters. Both the poem and the movie share similarities; however, the way that each contrasts gender roles, the comportment of a hero, and the role of religions reveals the values of the societies that each was created for.…

The book of Beowulf (Heaney) and the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson) have much in common; however, they definitely contain more differences because of shifts in culture that have taken place over the last 1300 years. The epic, more unrealistic and fanciful than the movie, reflects a more medieval mindset when it comes to understanding the relationship of good and evil. When cultural values come into play in the epic and the movie, so many changes and differences exist since time has made our ideas and thoughts more complex. These differences become especially clear when considering the characters that have been added to the Beowulf story through the movie and their effect upon Grendel, the epic’s villain turned anti-hero. In Beowulf, they only explain one side to this story and that’s the words and thoughts of the people of Herot and, of course, the great and powerful Beowulf.…

The saying “there are two sides to every story” rings especially true when comparing the various personas of Grendel throughout the poem, Beowulf, the story, Grendel, and the YouTube clip shown in class. Grendel’s characterization varies greatly in the movie, book and poem equally. The contrasting viewpoints play off of the theme “Morality vs. Instinct”. Also, Grendel’s character differs based upon the perspective of the writer and his prior experiences with Grendel. However, Grendel’s action remain constant throughout each outlet.…

Modern Society Clashes with The Tale of Beowulf There are many differences between the 2005 movie of Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson) and the old Epic Poem called Beowulf (Heaney). These differences include the amount of realism and cultural differences between the two eras and the differences of the existing characters in the Epic in contrast to the Movie. Even though this so called, “new modern day Beowulf,” as depicted in the 2005 movie follows along some of the same paths as the first two parts of the epic, it is much different in a morality and cultural way. This would be because back in the epic’s day they thought that something was evil for being evil and now a days there seems to always have a reasoning of why that particular character…

This leads Beowulf to have intercourse with her. This has a drastic effect on the viewer’s perception of Beowulf because his heroism comes into question. Unlike the poem which shows Beowulf as an uncompromising, valiant warrior with no flaws or human weakness and has super natural strength, the movie presents Beowulf as a physically strong but worldly man. This representation of Beowulf can be seen as an attempt to have the audience feel more relatable…

After watching the movie Beowulf and Grendel and reading the epic Beowulf, there were many cultural differences in the two pieces of work which made them different in their own ways. Although both works were made to simply entertain readers with the story about Beowulf, the two pieces of work portrayed it in a way that would differ because of the cultural differences. When comparing the works together, you notice that the characters in the movie--characters which include Grendel, the son of Ecgtheow, Beowulf, and King Hrothgar-- are mostly the same as their character in the epic with some differences because of the differences in the cultures. When reading the epic Beowulf, you initially learn that Grendel is brutally attacking the Danes’ mead…
