Beowulf Book Vs Movie

I never knew that there would be that many differences between a book and a movie made in Hollywood. The epic story I’m comparing and contrasting is known as the first English epic written in 1000 A.D. referred to Beowulf. In class we read the epic story of Beowulf and watched the movie Beowulf and were assigned to write an essay comparing and contrasting the book from the movie. When learning more about the epic story and looking beyond the words, the story shows more than an epic hero, it shows how religious views were between Christianity and Paganism. In both the movie and book there is a golden cup that is treasured and loved by all the people in The land of the Danes, but when the cup is around trouble is soon to follow. Also, in the …show more content…
This can be displayed in both the story and the book. In the book it talks in a scene where they practice their paganism by praying to different gods one being the devil and sacrificing prized animals like sheep and cattle. Also, another Paganism view would be of Grendel’s mother being a manipulative, wicked woman and how women were feared during the time. There is a Christian figure by the name of Wealhtheow in the movie showing the religion and views of it. She is the queen and wife of Hrothgar, who is the king of the land during time where Grendel continues to attack. Wealtheow represents Christianity in different ways, one being the conservative one that does not want to do things with the sinner and liar. That may be displayed as she gives no attention to Hrothgar, for he had slept with Grendels mother and Grendel being his son. Another scene where this may also be shown is, when Beowulf is to take over after Hrothgar jumps off the side of a mountain to his death. Now today you may see how popular the religion of Christianity is, but how it was not so much at the beginning of …show more content…
Small differences are able to be worked with but one major change can turn the whole plot upside down and begin to go off track very quickly. A turn in religion during the time may have faulted the story some but that was not able to be controlled due to the widespread of Paganism to Christianity. As for the golden cup goes, I would never want to be in the same area as something that is quickly followed by bad incidents and

Can the medieval and the contemporary ever be compared? Although they were written many years apart, the great classics Beowulf and The Hobbit share several similar elements. J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, The Hobbit, was published in 1937. In contrast, Beowulf’s author is unknown, and the earliest manuscript dates back to about 1000 A.D. Written in distinct styles, the narratives differ since one is an epic poem and the other is a novel. Despite the age difference, parallels abound between the two tales, including brave protagonists, similar plot lines, and malicious dragons as the antagonist.…

To further insult Beowulf, Unferth tells him “I not only doubt that you will be able to stand for a moment against Grendel, but I doubt you will even have the belly to stay in the hall all night.” This burning envy is born from Hrothgar’s favoritism towards Beowulf. Before Grendel’s attacks, Hrothgar had honored Unferth as his “wisest advisor”, but with Beowulf’s arrival the king had completely forgotten about Unferth. The poem, Beowulf, relates the hero with the Christian figure, Jesus Christ through the representations of Beowulf’s character and funeral; yet the film paints Beowulf as a pagan figure through his involvement in Nordic rituals and relics as well as humiliating the ethics of Christianity by displaying a sinful character such as…

Extra Characters Added to the Later Work On average, 3 out of 5 of my friends will always claim that the book is more superior than the movie. Supposedly the book presents additional details about the characters and gives you the opportunity to connect the dots and gain perception. However, in this case, the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson, 2005.) added characters such as the witch, Grendel’s son, and the praised man, to emphasize that the world views from today greatly differ in regard to the complications of understanding the concept of good and evil.…

In both the 2007 movie and the epic poem Beowulf, it starts out with the celebration of Hrothgar's new mead hall known as Herot. They all are singing, cheering, and dancing very loudly for the majority of the people are quite drunk. None of them pay attention to the consequences of Grendel coming to ruin their fun and games until it is too late. There are several obvious differences between the poem and movie. The movie follows the basic storyline of Beowulf in which he defeats monster-like beasts and is very confident in himself, yet it alos alters the story some.…

Beowulf, a Pagan or Christian Poem Prose, riddles, poetry, and proverbs can all be found in Old English Literature, as well as a mixture of Christian and pagan traditions and influences. One such an example would be, Beowulf, the epic long poem whose title character displays heroism and generosity. In this paper, I will explain how Christian values have been woven throughout the poem and mixed with Germanic hero values. Secondly, I will explain the long standing debate of whether or not Beowulf can be considered a Christian or pagan epic. I will compare the elegiac themes in the Wanderer and Beowulf and how they were heavily influenced by the Anglo-Saxons.…

The first example of the similarities and differences in the epic poem and the movie is the portrayal of Beowulf. For example he still seeking for fame and glory, he also boasts about himself, and is immensely strong. The Movie Beowulf is such a good movie, it gave values, inspiration, and hope in our life. The character of Beowulf is such very different creature from other human and is possessed a lot of talent, skills and a super-natural power that differ from an ordinary person. I`ll learned a lot of things after watching the movie, example of this is the courage and bravery because while Beowulf is fighting against the monster Grendel, he use his ability to fight the monster instead of weapons. When an individual reads Beowulf, it can become very confusing on deciding whether the poem is a Christian or pagan poem. Many people can make an argument that Beowulf is a Christian poem while others can see it more from a pagan point of view, personally, I see a mixture of both Christianity and pagan beliefs within the poem. For example, the poem describes Hrothgar as an individual who does not yet know of the true God, but Hrothgar and many other characters throughout the poem show their praise to God every time something seems to go in their favor; this can easily confuse many throughout the story. There are many examples of Christianity influences throughout the poem, “A boy was later born to him, young in the courts, whom God sent as…

In the epic poem and movie Beowulf there are a lot of differences and similarities between the two. Can you spot some of the differences that happened in the movie and the book? Well here is some of the things that I spotted out during the movie that didn’t happened in the book. First, the battle between Beowulf and Grendel in the movie they were awake and partying during his attack; however, in the book they were sleep. Second, the battle against Grendel’s mother didn’t happened in the movie, but in the book they actually fought, and he killed her.…

These two great literary pieces, “Beowulf” and “Sir Gawain and The Green Knight” revolve around the idea of heroes being brave, courageous and honorable. Both are very similar with slight differences, such as the way the hero is depicted throughout the story, the various elements of the stories, magic, and more. These stories influence readers at the time like what it means to be a hero and also there are Christian influences. In “Beowulf”, the main character Beowulf is legendary and venerable.…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…
