Beowulf Leadership Qualities

Improved Essays
A leader has many qualities, and both authors; Tom Loughman, and John Finley talk about some of these qualities in “Beowulf and the Teaching of Leadership”. Beowulf was a great and fierce leader when it came to defending his people from monsters such as Grendel and Grendel’s mother. It's a commonly known fact that almost all movies originated from books, and this is absolutely the case with Beowulf the epic poem, which was translated into a movie. However although the poem and the movie are dramatically different, there are still some similarities in both characters Beowulf and Grendel that hold true in the epic and the movie. The author of Beowulf shows that Grendel is an evil and demonic, devilish creature that is cursed by God, whereas Beowulf is fearless and heroic- a courageous man who is watched over by God. These main characteristics are shown in the epic poem and in the movie as well and the two contrasting characters are still common tropes known today- the hero and the villain. In this aspect, the cultural similarities are seen despite the fact that the epic was written many years ago, whereas the movie was recently produced.…

The Evolution of Beowulf Throughout the story of Beowulf the great hero accomplishes three great feats against three terrible monsters. On the surface of each battle readers can see that Beowulf portrays wlenco, however, if we look a little deeper into each conflict we can see positive character development within Beowulf himself. In this poem Beowulf clashes with Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon that ravages his community; within each battle Beowulf has a subtle change in character that eventually leads him to become a great king. Before the author reaches Beowulf’s first conflict he writes Beowulf off as arrogant and bold.…
