Beowulf: In The Hero's Journey

People throughout life all grow up looking up to a hero. Who was yours? In the Hero’s Journey it explains the life of a hero. It starts with they find their calling then they go through many challenges and in the end meet there match that leaves them remembered as a great hero. In Beowulf the story he hears about a place called Herot which has been under attack for twelve years by a great monster (Grendel) and so he decides that he is going to take on the mighty beast. Whenever Beowulf defeats the great monster Grendel’s mother comes back to Herot to take back her son’s arm and terrorize the town. The call invites the initiate into the adventure, offers her the opportunity to face the unknown and gain something of physical or spiritual value. Beowulf’s calling to make him save the people of Herot was that he enjoyed the challenge of destroying great monsters so when the news got to the geats that the Danes were in trouble because of a monster he wanted to defeat. Walt’s calling was that overtime as he grew to like the Hmong family he realized what trouble they were in. He also saw that they were unable to defend themselves against the gang so he chose to intervene. The Threshold is the “Jumping off point” for the adventure. It is the interface between the known and unknown. The threshold for Beowulf is when he had killed Grendel already but the mother of Grendel had came back to the town and attacked it, getting Grendel’s arm back. So Beowulf goes down into the lake looking for her into the unknown where no man dare go. The threshold of Gran Torino is when the Hmong family gets attacked and Walt has had enough so you know he is finally going to do something about the gang but you don’t know
