The young hero faces his grotesque enemy; finally this great conflict has come to a head, as both sides prepare for the final battle. The eyes of the hero’s faithful followers earnestly watches as the opposing forces of good and evil engage in an intricate fight; silently cheering for their hero to prevail. With a mighty swing of the hero’s blade, the foe breathed his last ghastly breath. Unfortunately, the hero did not leave the battle unscathed, his wounds were fatal. The victorious warrior closed his eyes and used his dying breath to tell his comrades how he wished to be immortalized, before he entered his God’s kingdom. Frequently, heroes of the past die after a final battle with a great enemy. Heroes of today rarely ever truly die. There are instances where the public thinks the hero was killed but in reality the hero survived and is training in the mountains of Tibet before they return. Past Heroes usually die, but before they actually become deceased, they speak of how they wished to be immortalized. After Beowulf was grievously wounded from his fight with the dragon, he laid dying, but he told his follower Wiglaf “Have the brave Geats build me a tomb, when the funeral flames have burned me, and build it here, at the water’s edge, high on this spit of land, so sailors can see this tower and remember my name, and call it Beowulf’s tower, and boats in the darkness, and mist, crossing the sea, will know it.”(58). The great warrior Beowulf wished to be remembered after death. Modern heroes usually don’t die, so they never have an opportunity to speak of how they want to be remembered. In the epic poem Beowulf there is no romance, no romance to speak of. Today’s hero stories always have romance. Every hero today has a romantic interest, Beowulf has no romantic interest. There really is no female presence in the poem Beowulf. However, today there is always a female presence and some sort of romance. Spider-man, Batman, Superman and many other modern heroes have a romantic interest. While Beowulf may be lacking romantic love there is a plethora of love between comrades, the sort of love that friends share. Beowulf has his loyal comrades that follow and support him in battle. Present-day heroes also have loyal comrades. Beowulf and modern heroes both have comrades, people who help them in their battles. Frequently there is one singular individual that is so loyal that they fight along side the hero. This would be the sidekick. Beowulf also had a sidekick, the bravest and most loyal of Beowulf’s men: Wiglaf. When Beowulf was fighting the fierce dragon “none of his comrades came to him, helped him, his brave and noble followers; they ran for their lives, fled deep in a wood. And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, as a good man must, what kinship should mean. His name was Wiglaf…”(54).
