Frequently, heroes of the past die after a final battle with a great enemy. Heroes of today rarely ever truly die. There are instances where the public thinks the hero was killed but in reality the hero survived and is training in the mountains of Tibet before they return. Past Heroes usually die, but before they actually become deceased, they speak of how they wished to be immortalized. After Beowulf was grievously wounded from his fight with the dragon, he laid dying, but he told his follower Wiglaf “Have the brave Geats build me a tomb, when the funeral flames have burned me, and build it here, at the water’s edge, high on this spit of land, so sailors can see this tower and remember my name, and call it Beowulf’s tower, and boats in the darkness, and mist, crossing the sea, will know it.”(58). In the epic poem Beowulf there is no romance, no romance to speak of. Today’s hero stories always have romance. Every hero today has a romantic interest, Beowulf has no romantic interest. There really is no female presence in the poem Beowulf. However, today there is always a female presence and some sort of romance. Spider-man, Batman, Superman and many other modern heroes have a romantic interest. While Beowulf may be lacking romantic love there is a plethora of love between comrades, the sort of love that friends share. Beowulf has his loyal comrades that follow and support him in battle. Present-day heroes also have loyal comrades. Beowulf and modern heroes both have comrades, people who help them in their battles. Frequently there is one singular individual that is so loyal that they fight along side the hero. This would be the sidekick. Beowulf also had a sidekick, the bravest and most loyal of Beowulf’s men: Wiglaf. When Beowulf was fighting the fierce dragon “none of his comrades came to him, helped him, his brave and noble followers; they ran for their lives, fled deep in a wood. And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, as a good man must, what kinship should mean. His name was Wiglaf…”(54).
