Beowulf Good Vs Evil

Improved Essays
Throughout history here has been good and evil, and even today we wage wars upon people that we believe to be evil which is done in today's modern world. This is also significant because people as far back as we can remember having fought over who is good and who's evil and rights and wrongs. In the epic, Beowulf, and the novel, The Rule of Three, by Eric Walters they both have set standards on what makes a being evil. In Beowulf, the hero Beowulf plays the role of a good person against a barbaric raging monster, who he kills and for killing it and he must overcome even more obstacles to save even more people. In, The Rule of Three, The main character Adam lives in a close knit community after a global electronic shutdown stopping all facilities …show more content…
In today's modern world, the civilized and educated people look at other people that are barbaric and ruthless as evil. In the article about Grendel’s Mother, it stated that from her point of view she was good and Beowulf was evil and vice a versa. But, from both points of view as evil they see the other a cruel and barbaric and both look at himself as heroic and brave. In the second paragraph Adam and the prisoner have different views of good and evil. One thinks that they are doing what they think that they need to do to survive and the other doesn't agree with the fact that their idea of survival is killing innocents for materials. The prisoner does not think of it as good and evil rather he thinks of it as eat or be eaten. Yet from Adams view the prisoner and his group of mercenaries are what he thinks of as evil for murdering several innocents for small benefits. An example of how good versus evil is used today is the modern war against I.S.I.S. We do not condone their violent acts against what the extremists call “non-believers”, and they look upon us as the non believers as being evil and a disgrace to their god. We look upon them with our different ideas of religion and we call I.S.I.S. evil for the hostile actions they are taking to fulfill their prophecy. This shows how I.S.I.S. sees themselves as righteous and faithful and the good against evil. We, as Americans, see their cruel and violent acts as evil and since we are trying to eliminate I.S.I.S we see ourself as the good wiping out the evil. Beowulf, Grendel’s Mother, Adam and the prisoner all see themselves as good and the other evil, even though books tell it as the main

Almost everything in the world today seems to revolve around the concept of evil; whether it comes from music, movies, literature, and society in general. Although British literature stories mainly have the concept of good vs. evil, they shed the most light on the evil aspect of people. The stories include the motives and reasons that go with the intentions of evil that will be carried out in the story. Most of the stories we read this semester in English have a lot of evil incorporated in them.…

Morality In Fifth Business: A Study of Good and Evil Is there a difference between good and evil? Throughout Fifth Business, Robertson Davies attempts to address this seemingly simple question. Davies writes against the simple system of good vs. evil, instead arguing that there is a spectrum of morality that governs our actions instead of definitive rights and wrongs. Davies conveys this through plot and style devices woven into the narrative of the life experiences of Dunstan “Dunny” Ramsey, who encounters a variety of non-orthodox characters such as his supposed saint Mary Dempster, his friend and rival Percy “Boy” Staunton, and even himself, that challenge what society thinks of as good and evil.…

Stealing is a sin, which can be deemed as a monstrous characteristic because it impairs the welfare of the individuals who get robbed. The idea of looking up to God’s ideals is found in Beowulf, “For the killing of Abel the Eternal Lord had exacted a price: Cain got no good from committing that murder.” (107) Beowulf does not punish the thief because he leads him to an even bigger monster, which can be seen a hypocritical because all monstrous actions should be punished if Beowulf is an honorable ruler who truly looked up to the ideal’s of God, as mentioned throughout the entire text. Without the creation of the dragon in Beowulf, hypocrisy might have never become an idea and Beowulf reputation could have never been reevaluated, this helps defend Cohen’s thesis of “The Monster Stands at the Threshold… of Becoming.” This thesis discusses why monsters were created and the reevaluation of aspects within cultures and societies, which Beowulf is the image of the culture and society at…

In the epic poem, Beowulf, the recurring image of darkness is often used as a portrayal of death and the unknown. The author also uses the same image to depict evil and sin and its relationship to Christianity. The underlying elements of Christianity within Beowulf can be attributed to the recent conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Through the persisting application of darkness, Beowulf addresses the presence of sin and the fundamental Christian beliefs in a savior and the redemption from sin. Throughout the poem, the pervasive use of sinister monsters lurking in darkness portrays the immoral acts of sin and evil.…
