His first fight is with the monster Grendel, who has been terrorising the village, Herot for thirteen years. As beowulf goes into this battle he makes the choice to not use any weapons, only his hands, but what Beowulf does not know is Grendel can only be beat with hands, because he was cursed to be invincible to weapons, “There was something that could not have known at the time,/ that no blade on earth, no blacksmith’s art/ could ever damage their demon opponent” (Lines 800-803). Going into this battle Beowulf had no set plan on how things were going to go, but it all seemed to have worked out in Beowulf’s favor, because he caught Grendel while he was sleeping, as the fight was happening, Grendel slipped on blood and lost his grip on Beowulf, leading into the death of Grendel. Soon after Beowulf killed Grendel, he was asked by the king, Hrothgar to go find Grendel’s mother, and kill her as well, “I guarantee you; she will not get away” (line 1392). The king had Grendel’s mother be killed because he did not want her doing what her son had been doing for years before that. Although Beowulf won every battle he had come to face with, there was still an unrealistic amount of evil for one warrior to fight
