Beowulf is on a quest, in the beginning of the poem to kill Grendel. Grendel was feared by all men because he ate humans and attacked them in their sleep. Beowulf was pretty brave to kill Grendel on his own. Beowulf does not even use any weapons when he attacks Grendel, he only used his hand, and his own strength to squeeze his arm until the torture was unbearable. Beowulf goes on several quests throughout the poem. Beowulf also kills Grendel's mother and the dragon. One instant was during Beowulf's battle with Grendel. The other Geats saw that Beowulf might need help, but their weapons were useless against Grendel's tough hide. In the poem, they said that Grendel's hide "blunted every mortal man's blade." Beowulf still managed to rip Grendel's arm off, and Beowulf only used his hands.
