It turned out to be nothing like the epic poem. Hrothgar was a great, respectful king in the poem who maintained his status all throughout the poem, but on film they portrayed him as a fat, lazy drunk who ended up committing suicide therefore leaving Beowulf as King. Grendel’s Mom was a terrifying monster in the poem who was killed by Beowulf. In the movie she was a beautiful shape shifter who hooked up with both Hrothgar and Beowulf and lived on to lure other men to destruction. Beowulf and Grendel’s mother had an affair in the movie, which created the fire breathing dragon. Beowulf felt as if he had to kill the dragon because it reflected on all the terrible mistakes he has made, The reason he killed the dragon in the poem was because he wanted to die fulfilling his true desire of being a wonderful King. Grendel attacks the men while they are sleeping in the poem because he is a descendent of Cain and doesn’t believe in God, so he attacks God’s people. In the movie, he attacks them during the party because of the praise to his father, Hrothgar. Not to mention, with his eardrum hanging outside of his ear, making him extremely sensitive to noise. Instead of Beowulf ripping Grendel’s arms off with his bare hands and no armor, the movie decided to present him naked and pull off Grendel’s arm with a chain. Grendel is driven by envy and is triggered by the sounds of human joy. The dragon is only following its nature when it goes into the cave and rests on the hidden treasure. The author clearly presents greed and envy as innate qualities of these two monstrous beasts and directly associates both of them with evil. Ultimately, both monsters are defeated by Beowulf who is depicted as a good servant of God throughout the story. Once again suggesting that faith in God will prevail.…

Often when watching a movie based upon a piece of literature there are colossal differences; this is done to enhance the movie for the modern audiences. In the book Beowulf (Heaney, 2000) and in the screenplay Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarson, 2005), there are some character changes that either highlights the character or downplays them from the work of literature. Like how characters are changed to fit what is wanted of them for the context, religion is also tied in to fit the context and to also aid in establishing the views of the author or screenwriter. Time and time again, details are altered to fix the author’s or director's view on how it should be portrayed. When the epic poem and film are compared, characters along with their qualities…

A look into Cultural differences based on Beowulf Many cultural differences between the epic poem Beowulf (Gunnarson) and the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Heaney) were demonstrated, including character behavior. In the epic poem, characters that portray this difference from epic to movie are Beowulf and Grendel. Beowulf in the epic poem is mostly known as a God among men, he kills all the evil in his sight, has no flaws, and doesn’t care about much, other than being honorable. Being that this was written in the eighth to eleventh century people that wrote this were simplistic to the idea of everything God made is either good or evil. This explains why back in this time Beowulf was explained as having no flaws since good can't have any, in order to be known as good.…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot.…

The four main characters in this epic poem of good vs. evil are Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mom and the dragon who can all be looked at in many different ways. Beowulf was the hero for the Danish people in his youth and in his old age he was the hero a final time as he killed the dragon. Grendel was the reason that Beowulf came to this neighboring land and he was only acting the way he did because he was an outcast who had a very big problem with jealousy. Grendel’s mom was only doing what she believed was right by avenging her sons death to try to make amends. The dragon was just protecting what he thought was rightfully his and doing what he believed was…

He is portrayed as an epic hero that can withstand anything. In the movie, on the other hand, Beowulf lies and is sometimes very cowardly. It could be argued that this was done to humanize the character, but unfortunately this lead to Beowulf’s death against his son, the dragon, to be very unrighteous. Because he lied about killing Grendel’s mother, his character’s death isn’t as honorable as it was in the poem. It felt unsatisfying that he died the way he did.…
