Grendel, an exiled demon, was the first monster that Beowulf fought. Beowulf heard that the Danes, under King Hrothgar's rule, was under the attack of Grendel and went to protect their people and kill Grendel. Grendel was attacking the mead-hall because he did not like the sound of happiness and music playing every night. Beowulf knew he was the only one who could defeat grendel because of his great strength. He also wanted to repay King Hrothgar for doing a gracious favor for his father years before. He brought 14 other men with him, and they planned to attack Grendel barehanded when he appeared that night(“Beowulf” 15). The pressure was on Beowulf to use extreme strength, which resulted in him attacking Grendel and pulling his arm off. The end of this battle started the next battle with Grendel’s mom.
The second battle Beowulf fought was with Grendel’s mom, which started all because Beowulf took Grendel’s arm and hung it in the Mead Hall after their fight. She stole back Grendel's arm that night along …show more content…
The first two between Grendel and Grendel's mom were obviously similar because they were the same type of monster, destroying the same kingdom. These two battles were different from the battle with the dragon because Beowulf was fighting for another kingdom, not even his own. While fighting the dragon he was protecting his own kingdom.
