In the movie and the poem Beowulf there were many differences and similarities that stood out. I was interesting to be able to visually see the poem come to life. As it is always easier for me to be interested while I am watching something instead of reading it. In the book Beowulf goes back to Geatland, which is the land of the Geat's. He goes back to become a king of his uncles kingdom. In the movie he stays in the Denmark, which is the land of the Danes. And he becomes king of Hrothgar's kingdom.

I'm going to start with the differences between the movie and the poem. In the movie it showed Beowulf cut his arm off, so he could kill the dragon. It also showed him ripping out the dragon's heart. He died when he fell off the cliff with the

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot. In the book, After slaying Grendel's mother, Beowulf brings Hrunting, …show more content…
Similarities between the book and the movie are established to stay true to the theme of Beowulf, a theme in which a hero conquers great odds and shows what the epitome of humanity can achieve. This theme is essential to the development of any true epic. The most prominent similarity between the two is the characteristics granted to Beowulf, the key trait being arrogance. Arrogance is an important trait of any epic hero, in the film this arrogance is established in Beowulf's tale of swimming in the ocean during which he states he slew several sea monsters. However, in the background his followers can be seen stating that the original number was much smaller than Beowulf has stated. In both the movie and the book, Beowulf kills both Grendel and the dragon and is the hero of the epic. Also, Beowulf takes the arm of Grendel and his mother comes back for revenge. Another similarity is Beowulf brings fourteen men to help him slay Grendel. In addition to the similarities Beowulf get Grendel's head and brings it back. Beowulf dies in the end as a hero in both the book and

In both the film and poem Beowulf faces the same threats, but the poem’s version of Beowulf does not mention him struggling at all. When he fought Grendel, his first attack ended the fight. Grendel lost his arm and tried to flee from Beowulf. He does not deny his men’s support in the battle, but they die regardless. His encounter with Grendel’s mother was somewhat the same.…

For instance “The Battle with Grendel’s Mother” never transpired; instead she had a child with Beowulf. In “The Battle with Grendel”, the film insinuates that the men were awake when Grendel attacked and he also attacked numerous men. In the text on the hand, the men were asleep when he attacked and he only attacked Wiglaf. In “The Battle with The Dragon” viewers learned that he was actually Beowulf’s son. Throughout time there have been multiple analyses of Beowulf detailing the similarities and differences between the 2007 film and the various text translations.…

The first example of the similarities and differences in the epic poem and the movie is the portrayal of Beowulf. For example he still seeking for fame and glory, he also boasts about himself, and is immensely strong. In the Beowulf passage and movie they throw a party in Herot, where he tells the tales of the victories that he won against monsters and demons. Although, there are some differences between them, an example of this is, in the poem Beowulf was seen as a perfect being but in the movie he is flawed.…

Where did he come from? Though Beowulf is the center of this epic poem, hence the name, we do not know much about him or his background. As Kathryn Hume stated, “Virtually nothing else is given us; few private thoughts or personal hopes or misgivings; no characterizing features except extraordinary strength” (Hume 2). These factors complicate him more a character. Beowulf seemed a bit antisocial, he carried himself with the stature of one like a modern-day business man.…

Beowulf was interesting and I enjoyed both the movie and the book, yet in the book Beowulf went home to be king, his warriors fled him, and the dragon was angry about the thief; even though, in the movie, Beowulf was king of Herot, his warriors helped him during battle, and he was the dragon’s father. Beowulf became king according to the book upon his arrival to his homeland; however, in the movie he became king of Herot. Beowulf became king of Herot because Hrothgar jumped from the castle and killed himself, yet in the book Hrothgar died. Beowulf also had no wife, mistresses, or any children during his reign as king in the book.…

Furthermore, the second example of similarities and differences in the Beowulf poem and movie is Grendel’s mom role. In the Beowulf movie and poem, Grendel’s mother was a seduced; she used her body to get Beowulf’s attention. Regardless of how Grendel’s mother is described as a seduced, however, in the poem, she was a monster but in the movie, she was a human form. In the poem, “Beowulf”, Grendel’s mother is described as a female monster and sea hog. In the movie, she was an actual human form when she came out of the water and met Beowulf; this is when she asked Beowulf for a…

The poem, for example, referred to Christianity as well as some pagan beliefs. The movie mostly only refers to pagan gods that weren’t even mentioned in the original story. Another theme that was changed in the movie is Beowulf’s constant heroism. Beowulf is seen as a hero throughout the poem, and when he is told not to let pride get in his way of being a great man he listens. The Beowulf from the film does not do the same.…
