Who is your hero?

So what is a hero? A question most people have felt in their life. A hero is a person who puts others before themselves, expecting nothing in return out the kindness of their hearts. Most people think heroes are only in fairytales or when something drastic happens. Emergency services including police, firemen, and paramedics should be considered the biggest heroes to us all. In the British fictional story Beowulf, written by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet but translated by Burton Raffel; the character Wiglaf puts his life on the line to save the cynical main character Beowulf from a fiery dragon. These divergent heroes all have the common similarities of bravery, passion, and importance.

Being courageous is not an effortless task. Sometimes heroes put their lives on the line to do selfless acts of kindness. In the fictional story Beowulf, this was what Wiglaf did as he tried to save Beowulf from burning to death. In lines 690-695, 700, it says “A beaten warrior. None of his comrades came to help him, his brave, noble followers; they ran for their lives, fled. Deep in a wood. And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, as a good man must, what kinship should mean….his mind was made up…. Kindness for kindness.” Wiggins, Grant P. “Beowulf’. Their job isn’t always good and simple moments as they handle a lot of tragedy. They all deserve the label of being a hero.
