Top of Individuals always go through obstacles; that’s part of life. There is always a decision to be made. Whether, it is to be a positive or a negative decision. On these hard situations, people believe fate is in their hands. Fate is a predetermined event and it is often caused by a supernatural force. While others don’t believe that. In the poem, “Beowulf” translated by Seamus Heaney, the concept of fate is introduced and fate follows the protagonist throughout the poem. Beowulf was written by an anonymous author between eighth and eleventh century. The indication of fate existed even back then. When Beowulf went against Grendel, he chooses not to bring any weapons, but fight with his bare hands. Beowulf states, “No weapons, therefore, for either this night: unarmed he shall face me, if face me he dares, and may the Divine Lord in His wisdom, grant the glory of victory to whichever side He sees fit.” Through the context of words, Beowulf did not specifically say the word “fate”. But he reveals that fate will take whichever side that will prevail victorious. Eventually, fate was on Beowulf’s side through the battles of Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Another way fate was presented was when Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, acknowledges Beowulf’s accomplishments and declares Beowulf to be fit for the King of Geats. After fifty years passed, Hygelac the ruler of Geats wasn’t capable to defeat the fierce some warriors of Shylfings. Thus, Beowulf took the initiative and became the new King of the Geats and rule a strong kingdom. It was the outcome of fate for Beowulf to become the King of Geats. With the prior events of defeating difficult enemies, a respected ancestral and being popular amongst the people. Fate, decided Beowulf to become the ruler of the Geats.
