Throughout the motion of the journey, Gandalf regularly disappeared and reappeared, leaving the rest of the company to congregate and communicate with each other. Because of Gandalf’s swift personality and actions throughout the journey, the dwarves naturally accepted Bilbo as their leader when Gandalf is absent. When the dwarves were imprisoned by the wood elves, Bilbo contrived a unique plan with his ring to vacate them out of the prison. Although he lacked the physical traits, he used his mental skills to overcome his problems. He had a very strong sense of logic and planning, which was unusually because he lacked experience.
