Beowulf Compare and Contrast Essay
What are values? There is no correct answer to the question. Values can differ based on what area of the world one is in what time period one is discussing. A set of values from one group may be completely different or even harmful to another. Just like morals values are what we believe in not solid facts. We can see many examples of this in the Beowulf epic. There are many similarities and differences in Anglo-Saxon values compared to the Western values to hold onto today.
Beowulf is a hero. He has a code of honor. In the epic Beowulf is a king and a warrior. He and his men will stand up for their heroic beliefs and honor even if it costs them their lives. If his people live to the same code of honor as Beowulf they will be rewarded. Some of the traits that Beowulf and his men follow are courage, bravery, and loyalty.
In Beowulf he and his men were expected to be brave. There was no question about it. They were warriors and these kinds of people were the ones that were most respected. Look at all of the challenges Beowulf and his men had to face. They fought Grendel and his mother plus a dragon. In each one of these instances they could have easily been killed. These are largely considered very unpopular. Even though these wars have been going on for over ten years in one form or another most people have come to hate them. The average American is not going to say the soldiers are brave men fighting for a good cause. They are going to say the war is pointless and very expensive. Yes everyone says they support the troops and will put pictures of flags on Facebook but in the long run they do not really look at the honor and bravery of the soldiers. They look at a pointless war with way too many deaths and billions of dollars wasted. Battle in this case is not looked on as brave it’s looked on as
