What is the definition of a hero? As defined by googling a hero is a person that is admired or idealized for courage and outstanding achievements or noble qualities. This shows that everyone has some of the qualities of a hero. In the world today though there are many different types of heroes ranging from modern-day heroes like police officers and fighters to the imaginary or fantasy heroes like Spider-Man and The Flash. In between those heroes we also have celebrities and ordinary people who are also considered heroes to some. But the modern-day heroes we see today isn’t the same as the heroes of the past. This is not because of the speed that he was given but because of the actions that he takes with this gift. He has the courage to fight for the helpless and the strength to protect them. Barry had the maturity to wear a mask to protect his family and friends but also to make sure he stays true to who he is. All of these things make the Flash a great imaginary superhero with the standards that have been established.

In the past the qualities and characteristics of a hero were different. To be considered a hero you must continuously prove yourself in a battle to prove that you are strong and have courage. An example of this would be the epic hero Beowulf. He is the Son of Ecgtheow, the nephew of King Hygelac of the Geats and Future King of the Danes. He is so heroic, that there is a song about him that is well-known throughout the lands. His story starts with him racing for seven days across the sea against Breca, only to lose in the homestretch. This is stated to have happened because he was attacked by and fought off multiple sea monsters. By the time he slew them Breca had already won, handing Beowulf defeat. With much confidence, his story continues with the saving of a town by coming to the aid of King Hrothgar. With no fear, he crosses the sea with his fellow Geats to slay the monster (Grendel). Fighting with no armor or weapons, Beowulf tears off his arm, which causes him to bleed out until he eventually dies. With the death of Grendel, Beowulf brings a worse enemy to the kingdom, Grendel's mother. Having revenge in mind, Grendel’s mother terrorizes the Mead hall and hung many warriors in the kingdom. Beowulf defeats Grendel’s mother by using an ancient sword, which lies in her lair.

Beowulf’s final battle occurs fifty years later as King of the Danes. Even as an old man, Beowulf still fights with no fear to protect his people. He encounters one the fiercest creatures in the land, a dragon. As Beowulf and his people fight the dragon, his people run off in fear, while Wiglaf his trusted companion stays to help. Beowulf defeats the dragon but unfortunately dies due to a venomous bite from the dragon. Beowulf gives Wiglaf the collar from his
