When preparing for his battle against, Grendel, he was confident and stoic, with little to no fear shown for the battle ahead of him as he knows that he is fighting for the protection of the Danes. To further the notion of his confidence, he announces that he is fighting Grendel barehanded, to which he does successfully. Although he was shown to be confident before the battle, the fight against Grendel and the eventual defeat concludes Beowulf’s development into a heroic, confident young man. The dragon is a monster that demonstrates pure evil; because of this, Beowulf decides that he must take on the fight in order to protect the people who he represents. Now older in age, Beowulf reflects on the risks he took on his life when he was younger, and how now as a king, he must pursue the fight for the glory of winning. He still remains noble, however his confidence with the dragon is not of the confidence with Grendel. The difference in this fight compared to the one against Grendel was that now he fought for the people he loved and cared for — his people. He fought for the Danes against Grendel, however is was more of a show of courage and strength as opposed to devotion of a nation. This is why the second fight proves Beowulf’s character true character development with true and genuine nobility.
