Both epics are written to focus on honor and glory. (quote about defeating Grendel). Beowulf defeats the demons in order to attain glory and a better name. (Odysseus yelling at Cyclops quote). Odysseus also wants to better his name by achieving his actions.
Both Beowulf and Odysseus are extremely prideful. “But I will say that I stand out far ahead of all others such as are living mortals now . . .” (?) Beowulf’s challenges were Grendel and his mother and the Dragon, who ends up killing Beowulf in their glorious fight. Odysseus’ challenges were more numerous, however. He is a captive of calypso, Poseidon tries to kill him, he and his men get stranded on the land of the lotus eaters, and he almost gets eaten on the island of Cyclopes.
There are also many differences in Beowulf and the odyssey. Beowulf goes out looking for his battles, while Odysseus is only trying to get home when he encounters his battle(quotes). First, Beowulf leaves his home to go to Denmark to fight Grendel. Then he goes to Grendel’s mother’s lair and finally goes to the Dragon’s den. Odysseus’ battles don’t necessarily come to him, but he does not go looking for his battles like Beowulf does. He is forced into the battles by the gods that he angered.
