Beowulf And Odysseus Comparison

Another hero I wanted to use was Odysseus. Even though Odysseus isn't necessarily a modern hero, I felt that Odysseus and Beowulf would be the best “pair” since both of their stores are epic poems. Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem written around 700-1000 AD while The Odyssey is a Greek epic poem written around around the end of 8th century BC by the poet Homer. One characteristic that both Beowulf and Odysseus have is standing out in public. Beowulf is the best of the Geats and is loved by everyone is his kingdom, which allows Beowulf to fight Grendel. Odysseus, at first, didn’t want to fight in the war, he wanted to stay back in his kingdom in Ithaca, however, due to Odysseus’ personality and strong physique, he was dragged into the Trojan War by king Menelaus. …show more content…
Beowulf’s enemies were Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a fire breathing dragon. Odysseus’ enemies, while returning home, were Circe (witch-goddess), Polyphemus (cyclops, Poseidon’s son), Calypso, and many more. One characteristic that I found to be different was both Beowulf and Odysseus winning at the end. Even though Beowulf wins against Grendel and his mother, he dies while fighting and killing the fire breathing dragon. In my opinion, a hero is considered a winner if he/she kills the enemy AND returns alive. In Beowulf’s case, even though he kills all his enemies, he dies at the end. On the other hand, Odysseus is considered a winner. When the Trojan War was over, Odysseus’ goal was to return home and reunite with his wife and

Odysseus wanted to defeat the Trojans because he actually wanted to win the battle. Odysseus had a lot of ideas and became part of the action that took place during the Trojan War. As a soldier, Odysseus had at first convinced Achilles to join the Greeks to fight the Trojan War, as he was told that Achilles was an essential part of the team to be able to defeat Troy. The Greeks were later told by Kalchos that the Greeks would gain victory if three things were done (Iliad Book 2). Essentially, Odysseus did all the things that had to be done, however, the Greeks still had not defeated the Trojans which led to his idea.…

The film implies that Beowulf takes interest in the queen, while in the text there is no evidence of any romantic interest among them. This line from the film shows Beowulf’s interest, “Me It's not me he wants, my queen” (Memorable Quotes for Beowulf (2007))? The film states that Beowulf not only had an affair with Grendel’s Mother but also had a child with her. During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…

Along the expedition home, Odysseus displays his glory by showing off his pride and confidence. While the Trojan War was beginning to die down, Odysseus formulated a plan to spark the war back and leave victoriously. This action lead Odysseus to act in a more positive and self-assured way, which he reveals in the poem. For example, Homer says “of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy” (1.2-5). This quote reveals that Odysseus had the idea to give a wooden horse to the Trojans, as a gift, when it was really used to end the war.…

The Anglo-Saxon Era was one of transition from pagan beliefs to Christianity, which can be see interwoven in the literature of the period. By the time “Beowulf” was transcribed, pagan mythology and Christian truths were viewed as mutually exclusive ideals, but to many people these tales coexisted within their hearts and minds as is revealed by the story of “Beowulf” as the author transitions seamlessly between the two warring worldviews. The relationship of Christianity and pagan legends is complex and intertwined in literature; often, the pagan legends were recorded by Christian monks, who added hints of Christianity to the pagan tales. Looking back to the society and culture in history can provide valuable insights into today’s world and…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…

Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are two of the earliest stories of English literature, both beginning as oral traditions or tales. A hero is defined as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Beowulf and Sir Gawain are both portrayed as heroes of their kingdoms. Beowulf is shown as more boastful because his story is told during the early middle ages when men would speak very highly of themselves, while Sir Gawain is seen as modest and chivalric due to his story being set in the high middle ages. The two stories are very closely related because they share some of the key values of being a hero in the middle ages.…
