Many literary texts are shaped by elements of Pride, and Passion. Majority of the characters from literature also contain a mark of hubris that leads to their downfall. Heroes are admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. They like to show they have everything under control and love to create the “WOW” factor. Rarely is it possible to find an interesting text written that shows the perfections and imperfections of a hero all at once. From the epic poem Beowulf translated by: Burton Raffel, comes a strong, courageous hero by the name of Beowulf that portrays himself as the hero with a lot of pride. His arrogance led to his death because if he had just listened to people about reading what to eat and what not to eat in the wild, as well as walking with enough food and equipment, McCandless’s adventure would’ve been a success and he could have ended up writing about it in the near future. Unfortunately both characters, Beowulf and Chris McCandless had way too much pride in themselves that made them think they could do anything without anyone’s help in order to succeed. Subsequently, Nick Bartel author of the abridged and adapted version of the 1999 Oedipus The King shows Oedipus which means “Swollen-foot,” having a passion to find his real parents which lead to his downfall unfortunately. Oedipus, the child of Laius and Jocasta, was given to a herdsman named Polybus, to have Oedipus killed after his father Laius, the king, was eager for future-knowledge, and journeyed to the oracle at Delphi and found out the most unwelcoming news that his newborn son would grow up to kill his father, Laius, and marry his mother, Jocasta. A spike was driven through baby Oedipus' ankles causing his ankles to become inflamed and earning him his name
