Bilbo, the main character of the story, is a highly respected hobbit because of his family and the fact that he never been on an adventure (hobbits never leave), until now. He is chosen to become a thief and leaves his very comfortable hobbit hole to join thirteen people on an adventure. In the beginning, the hobbit is constantly getting the group in trouble and they start doubting him. Later on the journey, however, he becomes more “heroic” and starts getting his party and himself out of danger. During Bilbo’s encounter with Gollum, the narrator remarks, “I don’t know where he came from, or who he was,” (Tolkien 118). This means that while the narrator is all-knowing for the most part, there are still aspects he does not know. While this does not mean he is an unreliable narrator, it helps the reader to feel as if it is a personal story and the narrator is speaking directly to them, as he admits he does not know everything about Gollum, throwing his own personal opinion into the story. Consequently, the idea of the intrusion of a first-person perspective comes into effect. There are other times the narrator’s opinion is shown, including the nicknames he gives Bilbo.…
