Beowulf: A True Hero

Improved Essays
The legendary poem Beowulf is a work of the Anglo-Saxons. It is thrilling, bumpy, and can be confusing if every detail is on taken into account ride through out the poem. There are many themes I could identify throughout Beowulf but there is one main theme focused on Beowulf himself; heroic. In the Anglo-Saxon era Beowulf was classified as an ideal hero; intelligent, courageous, and strong physically and mentally. There is ample evidence in the poem to show the characteristics of being a hero portrayed by Beowulf. I believe that Beowulf goes above and beyond to show his bravery and that he is a true hero. In the Anglo Saxon period to be distinguished as a hero, you had to demonstrate acts of kindness, honor, and boldness better known as bravery.

A Collision of Two Stories “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” said Christopher Reeve, an American actor and author. Whenever readers think of heroes, the first thought that comes to mind is their success: defeated the monster, rescued the princess, or happiness at the end of their story. The journey, however, is hardly ever thought of because why does it even matter if the heroes reached their desired goals in the end? It matters because readers would not understand the meanings behind their success without the hardships throughout their journeys. It all becomes purposeless.…

Beowulf was a fictional hero that existed long ago from a tale from the fourth century who fought a monster to defend his people. However, it was not his sword fighting talent that he used to strike down Grendel and rescue his folks, it was the hope he bought for them. While imagined heroes such as Beowulf were depicted as those with super strength that typically save the day and defeat the antagonist, they still share the same morals and traits that realistic heroes inherit today. However, these real life heroes are regular human beings that do much more than overpowering the enemy and they may not even be remembered for it.…

Beowulf is a story of a noble hero named Beowulf who has superhuman strength that he use to fight his enemy. The story is quite interesting because he fights his enemy naked. What I don’t like about the story is the author used the concept of Paganism vs. Christianity, like in the line “we don’t need God, we need a hero”. But in the other hand, the story has also the concept of Good vs. Evil, like in the scenes when Beowulf fight monsters to save the life of many people. I think it was a good idea to use this themes to balance the story and to make the story more interesting.…

In Beowulf, Beowulf, the main character, is regarded as a hero. He is known throughout the Land of the Danes and the Land of the Geats as fearless and courageous when he comes to their aid to help slay Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and a Dragon. Beowulf’s heroism is exemplified in two phases: the first is youthful heroism and the second is mature heroism, once he is crowned King. Throughout his life, Beowulf helped not only his own people, but also those in other lands.
