As described, “The monster’s whole body was in pain, a tremendous wound appeared on his shoulder. Sinews split and the bone- lappings burst. Beowulf was granted the glory of winning…” (806). In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…

Beowulf does not even use any weapons when he attacks Grendel, he only used his hand, and his own strength to squeeze his arm until the torture was unbearable. Beowulf goes on several quests throughout the poem. Beowulf also kills Grendel's mother and the dragon. Every monster or villain has a choice to choose good or evil. Usually when monsters choose evil or go down the path of destruction, they end up dead or on the losing side. Everyone faces a monster physically or emotionally. A character can have an inner-beast of not having credence in them or facing head on as a task that gets them to victory.…

The Anglo-Saxon period stretched over 600 years, starting around the 5th century to 1066, in which they were Germanic people who conquered England and declared it as their new home. Martin Puhvel, a lecturer at McGill University and a Literature researcher of Estonian origin, highlights Beowulf’s strengths, “The fantastic swimming prowess of Beowulf may well stand out as one of the most amazing abilities of a hero endowed with seemingly supernatural powers” (276). Puhvel believes that Beowulf’s supernatural abilities and strength prove his appearance as a hero. Not only do his strengths classify him as a hero but his ability to put others safety before himself define him as an epic hero. Beowulf gives his proclamation on how he will defeat Grendel, “hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend” (31.438-440). Beowulf has enough confidence to fight Grendel without a weapon, which displays his great strength and capabilities.…
