Beowulf: A Geatish Hero

Beowulf was a Geatish hero in this poem, who encountered many battles. His first battle was with Grendel, a demon that terrorizes the the King’s Mead Hall and preys on Hrothgar’s warriors. His second battle was with Grendel’s mother, and third was with the fire-breathing dragon. His battles show him to be the strongest, most capable warrior around. Beowulf sailed to Denmark with a group of men, determined to defeat Grendel. Beowulf’s father had once been done a huge favor by Hrothgar, and so the King accepted Beowulf’s wish to defeat Grendel. Beowulf and his men dined in the Meads hall with the King’s warriors in honor of Beowulf for his bravery. Finally Grendel shows up and they duel. Beowulf goes into battle with no armor to show his strength and Grendel is terrified. Grendel attempts to escape and Beowulf rips it’s arm off. Grendel’s mother killed one of the King’s most trusted advisors before she sneaks away back to the swamp. So, to avenge the death of Aeschere, Beowulf goes to the murky swamp and swims down to the Mother’s lair where they battle. Beowulf kills the Mother with a sword and then, after finding Grendel’s corpse decapitates it’s head and brings it back for the King. Unlike the first battle, the second occurred from the Mother’s determination for revenge. Grendel attacked the King and his men for no real reason other than because it was his nature. The first battle, Beowulf did not use any armor or weapons and was fought in the Mead hall. The second was in the Mother’s territory and Beowulf used a sword, forged for giants, to defeat the
