Central Theme: Perspective determines whether a person fails or succeeds. Bennis and Thomas describe a crucible as a “point of deep self-reflection” that forces a person to “question who they [are] and what [matters] to them” (Bennis and Thomas, p.99). The authors gave several examples that displayed how different people used their unpleasant or enlightening experiences to become successful. The most important thing to understand is that any opportunity good or bad can be taken as an opportunity to grow or go.
Critical Analysis: The authors did not give a formulaic response as to how to overcome or conquer a crucible; they solely gave examples of how successful people have overcome their personal crucibles. In my personal journey I have come to create a habit of of viewing the world through optimistic eyes. I must admit that there are times in which I am so caught up in the intensity of a situation that I forget to change my perspective, but I always return to a thought of “What can I learn from this?”.
