The poem "To a Dark Girl" counter acts what the advertisements are trying to sell. In the advertisements one can see various skin lightening products meant to bleach the skin and remove it's "darkness" to something more "light and attractive". In the poem however Bennett talks very differently about the idea of skin color.
To her one should not be ashamed of their skin color. Rather one should be happy with there heritage and embrace who they are. A powerful line in the poem this idea of being comfortable with ones self image is, "I love you for your browness".
This idea of a perfect image in modern society has never gone away. To this day people aspire to achieve unattainable looks as seen in photoshoped images in the media. This
