Benjamin Mays was a distinguished African American minister.He was also a mentor for Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. .Mays was also an American Baptist minister. Benjamin Mays wa born in a rural area outside Ninety-six,South Carolina on august 1,1894 or 1985.He was the son of Hezekiah Mays and Louvenia Carter.They were tenant farmers that had been enslaved.Benjamin was the youngest of eight children.They all grew up in the rural south when whites segregated African Americans by law. Benjamin Mays refused to be limited by the widespread poverty and racism of his place of birth.After of period of suffering he was accepted by Bates College in Maine.After he completed his B.A. there,Mays entered the University of Chicago
