NARRATIVE INTERVIEW (BENJAMIN MALLOY)
The person I interviewed is Benjamin Malloy, my uncle. He works as a sales and marketing executive and has had a lot of influence in my life. I look up to him as a mentor. His resilience, determination and hard work are what I admire. During the interview, he acknowledged playing football as being the most important experience that helped in shaping the man he is today.
He became a football player when he joined high school and credits it for having taught him a plenty of the things he applies in his daily life. When he started playing football, he was not considered as having the body or character of an athlete. He accredits this for having taught him perseverance. He was chubby and not among the good players in the team. This got him mocked a lot. The constant mocking brought many tears and thoughts of quitting. He spent a lot of time practicing and the endless drills and aching muscles improved his skills and earned the respect of his

He narrated a story of how during the tryouts for the school football team he received a lot of discouragement with a lot of people not seeing him as capable of playing football. The negativity was meant to make him drop out of the trials but he ignored all of it and built his self-confidence. He convinced himself that he would do it as long as he had the passion for it. This self-confidence is what lead him to find the limit he can reach. This helped him gain a great amount of confidence and sculpted him into the man he is today. The confidence he gained earned him respect from his teammates. This confidence has been important in his current profession of sales and marketing. Without this confidence, customers would not believe in him or the product he is selling. The self-confidence has also made him not to be easily discouraged by defeat or failure but instead learn from his

I interviewed head coach of the North Scott Trap Team, Dave Fredericksen. My father happens to be the head coach, however, his position in the organization is nothing more than a coincidence; I would be interviewing the coach of the team regardless of who the coach was at the time. I interviewed the coach of the trap team because it is such a different and misunderstood sport, especially in a society that questions our Second Amendment rights. I asked him questions that required him to reflect on the purpose and his personal opinions about the sport, as well as the fundamental questions from the syllabus.…

I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds. In my opinion, I think the most important part of the WU diversity statement is the first sentence that says, “The mission of our diversity initiative is to honor the Washburn University commitment to respect, embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity at all levels of the University and surrounding communities through faculty, staff, student and administrative efforts and community partnerships.” I think this sentence is important because it is stating what the mission of diversity is at Washburn. I support the WU diversity statement because the last sentence states, “Washburn defines diversity broadly to encompass gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and identity, disability, age, religion and national origin” and this greatly reflects my views on diversity.…

The interview with Mr. Randy Taylor, a Ph. D student in the Social, Cognitive, and Neuroscience area as well as Intro to Psychology professor, was interesting because he is a relatively newer professor and somewhat closer to his students as compared to other professors. His interview involved questions about his interest in psychology, as well as the path he intends to take as a professor, as well as the struggles that he will face. Equally importantly, I asked him regarding the struggles with working in a research environment, which is an environment that I hope to some day work in. When/Why did you become interested in studying Psychology?…
