Benjamin Franklin's Tranquility

Don’t let the little annoyances of life make you angry. Control your temper. These are a couple of saying that most people have heard at some point in their life, they also pertain to one of Benjamin Franklin’s virtues, Tranquility. It seems as though many people struggle to control their temper including myself. My temper has become a problem that I must deal with. It has caused me to lose sleep, friends, and the image of the person I want to be. I feel that the best way for me to become a more tranquil person, would be to get a note book. In the note book I would put the date at the top of each page, then every time I get angry I would put a tally mark on the page. I would also have another note book and in that note book I would

Morality has often been thought of as limited due to the fundamental rights and wrongs everyone has known since kindergarten, however there is an overabundance of approaches to elucidate this skill. For instance, in the autobiography A Most Awkward, Ridiculous Appearance by Benjamin Franklin, he provides a brief story on his arrival to Philadelphia and then explains how he conducts his thirteen moral virtues that he plans to accomplish. Franklin’s approach with this piece can be related to a prescription, such as applying one moral a day until the recipient can successfully add on another. This process would continue on until all thirteen morals have been mastered. To me this method seems arduous and extremely extensive because there is no clear way to justify if the virtue has been completed successfully.…

Anger, is normal, however, it is the cause of a notable amount of negative actions in society, as shown by Jack Merridew in the Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris the article “Columbine High School Shooting”. Anger can gradually cause people to change and completely shift into totally different characters and perform actions that normally would not be carried out by this person. But Franklin continued to urge peace; both to his British friends and to the patriots back home” (Franklin 241). Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." That quote often comes up in the context of new technology and concerns about government surveillance. Simply put; and I'm paraphrasing here; but Ben Franklin essentially said at one point, those who would exchange self-government for a bit of security deserve neither to be self-govern nor security. The quotation is considered to come from a letter that Franklin had written on behalf of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Very few citizens who quote these words, however, have any idea where they come from or what Franklin really meant when he wrote them.…
